What should you know about jaw, neck and ear pain?

Short answer
Jaw, neck and ear pain may come from an ear problem, throat or sinus inflammation, or pain referred from nearby tissues.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Useful clue
- Chewing-related pain can suggest jaw muscles or the jaw joint.
- Avoid
- Do not insert cotton buds or other objects into the ear.
The short answer
The pattern matters: blocked hearing suggests earwax, while congestion, facial pressure or a sore throat can point toward an upper-airway cause.
What the combination can mean
The ear, jaw, throat and neck share nearby nerves and muscles, so discomfort may be felt away from its starting point. A common cold or sinusitis can create pressure around the face and ear. Tonsillitis may cause throat pain that spreads toward the ear. Middle-ear infection can cause ear pain, reduced hearing or fever. Earwax buildup can cause fullness and muffled hearing without an infection.
Jaw pain that worsens with chewing, clenching or opening the mouth may involve the jaw joint or surrounding muscles. These symptoms do not identify one cause on their own.
What you can do now
Rest, drink fluids and choose softer foods if chewing increases pain. A warm compress over the jaw or neck may ease muscle discomfort. Follow the label directions for a pain reliever that is suitable for you, and avoid putting cotton buds or objects into the ear. Do not start antibiotics without an assessment; they help only some infections. If blocked hearing is caused by wax, a clinician can discuss ear wax removal safely.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment if pain is severe, keeps returning, lasts beyond a short illness, or comes with hearing change, discharge, fever, facial swelling or trouble swallowing. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, rapidly increasing neck swelling, new weakness, confusion or a severe headache with neck stiffness. A clinician can examine the ear, throat, jaw and neck together.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could the pain be referred from my throat, sinuses or jaw? Do you see wax, inflammation or infection in the ear? Which pain relief is suitable with my medicines and health conditions? What changes should prompt a faster review?

Questions people ask
Can sinus symptoms cause ear pain?
Yes. Congestion and sinus inflammation can create pressure that is felt around the ear, cheek, jaw or forehead.
Should I use antibiotics for this pain?
Only after a clinician identifies an infection for which antibiotics are appropriate; many causes do not improve with them.
