Jaw and ear pain on one side

Pain on one side that increases when chewing or opening the mouth can involve the jaw joint or chewing muscles on that side. Earwax buildup or a middle-ear infection may cause pressure, reduced hearing, fever, or discharge. A cold, sinusitis, or tonsillitis can refer pain toward one ear, while a tooth problem may cause focused jaw tenderness. The side alone does not identify the cause; an ear, mouth, throat, and jaw examination may be needed.

Choose soft foods, chew on the more comfortable side only if that does not increase pain, and avoid gum and wide yawns.
