Jardiance rash: what to know and do

A drug eruption may cause itchy patches, spots or hives after exposure to a medicine. A rash can also be caused by contact dermatitis, heat, intertrigo, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies or atopic dermatitis. Its timing, location and appearance help distinguish these conditions.

Jardiance can also affect how the body handles glucose and urine, so genital or groin irritation should be described clearly. Note burning, discharge, odor, pain, fever and whether the skin is broken rather than assuming every symptom is the same rash.

Contact the prescriber or pharmacist about a new or spreading rash and provide the start date, photographs, current dose and all other medicines. Do not stop or replace Jardiance without a plan for diabetes care. Keep the affected area clean and dry, and avoid fragranced products until the cause is clearer.

A clinician may examine the skin and ask about recent products, infections, dose changes and previous reactions. That information helps determine whether the medicine is involved or whether a separate skin treatment is needed.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, widespread hives, blistering or skin peeling. Get prompt medical assessment for severe genital pain or swelling, rapidly spreading redness, fever, marked weakness or vomiting.
