What should you know about JAK2-positive myeloproliferative neoplasm?

JAK2 is a gene involved in signals that help blood-forming cells grow. A change affecting JAK2 can contribute to excess production of red cells, platelets, or marrow cells. Doctors combine the result with blood counts, examination, symptoms, spleen findings, and sometimes a bone marrow assessment to distinguish conditions such as polycythaemia vera, essential thrombocythaemia, and primary myelofibrosis.

The result is a disease clue, not a measurement of how you will feel or how the condition will behave. Some people have symptoms such as tiredness, itching, headaches, visual disturbance, abdominal fullness, or clotting problems; others have no symptoms when the result is found on a blood test.

Contact the haematology team promptly for persistent fever, unusual bleeding, or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling. These symptoms can reflect a clot, bleeding, infection, or spleen-related problem.
