What should you know about IVIG and hepatitis B?

How the structures involved in Hepatitis B differ from normal

Short answer

IVIG is pooled immune globulin given through a vein, while hepatitis B prevention and treatment depend on the exposure, test results, and recommended vaccine or antiviral plan.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

IVIG and hepatitis B are different decisions

IVIG contains antibodies collected from donated plasma. In selected situations, clinicians may consider immune globulin after a possible hepatitis B exposure, alongside specialist advice and vaccination when appropriate. It is not a general cure for established infection, and it should not replace testing or follow-up.

Hepatitis B can cause no symptoms or may cause tiredness, nausea, abdominal discomfort, yellowing of the skin or eyes, and dark urine. Symptoms alone cannot show whether infection is present or whether it is recent or long-standing. Blood tests guide the next step, and a liver function test may help assess liver irritation.

Act promptly after a possible exposure

Contact a healthcare service quickly after contact with infected blood or body fluids, a needlestick, or sexual exposure. Share when and how the exposure happened, whether you have completed hepatitis B vaccination, and any immune condition or medicine. Do not donate blood or share razors or toothbrushes while infection is being assessed. A clinician can discuss Hepatitis B Vaccination and arrange testing or follow-up.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help for confusion, severe weakness, vomiting that prevents drinking, severe abdominal pain, yellow eyes with worsening illness, bleeding, or fainting. After IVIG, emergency symptoms include breathing difficulty, facial swelling, chest pain, or collapse. Contact a clinician promptly for new dark urine, marked fatigue, or jaundice.

Questions for your doctor

Was my exposure significant? Do I need immune globulin, vaccination, testing, or more than one of these? Which hepatitis B tests will be checked? Could IVIG affect test interpretation? How will my liver be monitored?

Questions people ask

Does IVIG cure hepatitis B?

No. IVIG may be considered for selected prevention situations, while established infection needs testing and an appropriate medical plan.

Should I wait for symptoms after an exposure?

No. Contact a healthcare service promptly because prevention decisions can depend on timing and vaccination history.
