IVF after embryo transfer: what to expect day by day

The embryo may begin interacting with the uterine lining during the days after transfer, but this process cannot be confirmed by sensations. Mild cramping, pelvic heaviness, bloating or light spotting can occur, while some people notice nothing. These symptoms can also come from the procedure or progesterone, so they do not establish whether implantation has occurred.

A home test taken too early may be confusing, especially if an hCG-containing medicine was used. Your clinic’s blood or urine test date is chosen to make the result more useful. Continue prescribed support until the clinic tells you otherwise.

Take each prescribed medicine at the stated time; ask how to handle a missed dose or vomiting. Walk, work, shower and sleep according to comfort unless your fertility team gave different instructions. Avoid strenuous exertion, overheating and activities your clinic has restricted. Choose regular fluids and meals, and avoid alcohol and smoking while waiting for the result.

Record bleeding, pain and medicines in a simple note. Keep the pregnancy-test appointment even if you have spotting or no symptoms. Contact your fertility clinic promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, faintness, fever, repeated vomiting, breathlessness, chest pain, or marked abdominal swelling. These symptoms need assessment rather than waiting for the test date. If you cannot reach the clinic and symptoms are severe, use local emergency services.
