IV Neuroblastoma: What to Know

Neuroblastoma is a cancer of immature nerve cells, often beginning in tissues near the adrenal glands or along the spine. “IV” describes the route of a medicine, commonly through a peripheral cannula or a longer-term central line. The treatment plan depends on the child's age, tumour location, spread, biology, symptoms, and response to earlier care. IV medicines may be used before or after surgery, alongside other systemic treatment, or as part of a more intensive plan.

The oncology team will explain the medicine, infusion schedule, line care, and monitoring. Keep a record of temperature, eating and drinking, bowel changes, pain, and any new symptoms. Follow the team's instructions about infection precautions and medicines. Call before giving a new over-the-counter product. Treatment may involve chemotherapy, tumour removal surgery, or targeted radioisotope therapy, depending on the child's individual plan.

Call the oncology team urgently for fever, chills, unusual sleepiness, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, or a child who seems suddenly much more unwell. Report redness, swelling, pain, leaking, or discharge at a line site. New weakness, severe pain, or reduced urine also needs prompt advice. Use the emergency number advised by the treating hospital if symptoms are severe.
