What should you know about IV antibiotics for skin infection?

The medicine enters a vein through a cannula, so a clinician can monitor you and adjust treatment as your skin responds. This approach may be considered for cellulitis with rapid spread, marked swelling, fever, or infection that needs hospital care. A collection such as a boil may also need drainage; antibiotics alone do not replace that assessment. The choice depends on the suspected bacteria, infection site, allergies, kidney function, and your general health.

Treatment may start intravenously and change to tablets when improvement makes that appropriate. Redness can take time to settle even after the infection is controlled.

Take or receive every dose exactly as prescribed, and tell the care team about antibiotic allergies, previous resistant infections, pregnancy, and medicines or supplements. Keep the affected area clean, avoid squeezing or puncturing it, and follow advice about elevation or dressings. Report new diarrhoea, a rash, pain or swelling around the cannula, or worsening redness while treatment is underway. Do not use leftover antibiotics or share them.

Seek urgent medical help if redness spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, the skin turns dusky or blistered, or you feel faint, confused, very unwell, or short of breath. Fever with shaking chills also needs prompt assessment. A red streak moving away from the infected area, swelling near the eye, or difficulty moving a nearby joint should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask which infection is being treated, why a vein-delivered antibiotic is suitable, how long monitoring may be needed, and what improvement should look like. Clarify whether drainage, a wound swab, blood tests, or a later switch to tablets is expected.
