Short answer

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of deeper skin and underlying tissue. IV antibiotics place medicine directly into a vein and are considered when illness is severe, infection is spreading, oral medicine cannot be taken or close monitoring is needed. The treating team selects the drug and route after examining you.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Why IV may be used
Severe infection, spreading disease or need for supervision
Monitoring
Redness, pain, swelling, temperature and general wellbeing
Emergency signs
Confusion, faintness, fast breathing or rapid deterioration

What treatment involves

A clinician may mark the edge of redness, check pain and swelling, review allergies and look for an entry point such as a wound or athlete's foot. Treatment can involve hospital or supervised outpatient care. Redness and tenderness may take time to settle even after the infection begins responding.

What you can do now

Take every prescribed dose and attend planned reviews. Keep the affected limb raised when practical, drink normally unless advised otherwise, and protect any wound with the instructed dressing. Do not share antibiotics or stop early because the skin looks better. Tell the team about rash, diarrhoea, vein pain or other new symptoms.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, marked swelling, fever, confusion, faintness, fast breathing or feeling suddenly very unwell. These symptoms can signal a serious infection, including sepsis. People with diabetes, poor circulation or reduced immunity should obtain prompt assessment for suspected cellulitis.

Questions for your doctor

Why is IV treatment recommended for me? How will you judge whether it is working? When might oral treatment be appropriate? Which wound or skin problem allowed bacteria to enter, and how can I prevent recurrence?

Questions people ask

Does everyone with cellulitis need IV antibiotics?

No. The route depends on severity, spread, ability to take oral medicine, medical history and clinical assessment.

When should cellulitis start looking better?

Your treating team will set expectations; pain, redness and swelling may not disappear immediately, so follow-up matters even when treatment has started.
