What should you know about an IUS hormonal coil?

The hormonal coil, or IUS, releases progestogen mainly inside the womb. It thickens cervical mucus and makes the womb lining thinner; it may also prevent ovulation in some users. Fitting is done through the vagina and cervix by a trained clinician. Spotting or irregular bleeding can happen after fitting, and periods may become lighter or stop. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Before fitting, discuss your bleeding pattern, pregnancy plans, medicines, and any history of pelvic infection or womb problems. Afterward, learn how your clinician wants you to check the threads and attend any recommended review. Seek advice if bleeding remains troublesome or symptoms do not settle. An IUS may be considered for heavy bleeding linked with conditions such as Uterine Fibroids, Adenomyosis, or Endometrial Hyperplasia, but suitability is individual.

Obtain urgent medical advice for severe or worsening lower-abdominal pain, fever, unusual or foul-smelling discharge, very heavy bleeding, a positive pregnancy test, or threads that cannot be felt when they were previously present. Sudden pain with dizziness or fainting needs emergency assessment. These symptoms can indicate infection, pregnancy-related complications, or a device that has moved.

Ask how fitting will feel, when contraception starts, what bleeding changes are expected, how long the device can remain in place, and which symptoms require same-day review.
