What should you know about IUGR and the umbilical cord?

Fetal growth restriction, also called IUGR, means a baby is not growing as expected during pregnancy. Doppler ultrasound can assess movement of blood through vessels in the umbilical cord and placenta. The result is considered alongside growth measurements, amniotic fluid, fetal movements, and the pregnancy stage. An unusual blood-flow pattern does not by itself predict exactly when birth will be needed, but it can lead to closer review.

Attend the planned scans and monitoring appointments. A Growth Scan can measure the baby and review fluid and placental findings, while Fetal Heart Monitoring checks the heart-rate pattern. Keep track of the movement pattern your maternity team has explained, and report a clear reduction promptly. Do not start supplements, bed rest, or medication for IUGR without advice; the plan depends on the scan findings and your health.

Contact your maternity unit urgently if your baby is moving less than usual, you cannot feel movements, or you have vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, regular painful contractions, severe headache, vision changes, or sudden swelling. These symptoms need assessment because they may signal a pregnancy complication, regardless of a previous scan result. Your team may discuss Induction of Labour or another birth plan when monitoring suggests that remaining pregnant is less safe than delivery.

Ask what the cord Doppler result means, how often growth and heart-rate checks are needed, which movement changes should trigger a call, and what findings would change the timing or method of birth.
