What should you know about IUGR sonography?

The sonographer may measure the baby's head, abdomen and thigh bone to estimate fetal weight. The report may also describe growth compared with gestational age, fluid around the baby and the placenta's appearance. Doppler measurements can help the maternity team assess circulation through the umbilical cord and other vessels. A result suggesting restricted growth does not by itself explain why it is happening or decide when birth should occur.

Keep the follow-up appointments arranged by your maternity team. Further imaging may be scheduled to compare growth over time rather than relying on a single estimate. Take prescribed medicines as directed and tell the team about reduced movements, bleeding or fluid leakage.

Contact your maternity unit promptly if your baby's movements are noticeably reduced or changed, or if you have vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe abdominal pain or severe headache with vision changes. These symptoms need assessment because they can signal a pregnancy complication, regardless of what an earlier scan showed.

Ask which measurements were below the expected range, whether blood-flow or fluid findings were reassuring, and when the next scan is due.
