What should you know about IUGR and a small abdomen?

The fetal abdomen reflects the baby’s available energy stores and can be affected by placental supply. A smaller abdominal measurement may therefore prompt assessment for fetal growth restriction, but ultrasound estimates have limits and one measurement does not provide a diagnosis. The clinician will compare the abdomen with the head and thigh measurements, check fluid and Doppler blood flow, and review earlier scans, pregnancy dates and your health.

Attend the recommended follow-up rather than trying to interpret the scan in isolation. A Growth Scan may track the abdominal measurement and overall pattern, while Fetal Heart Monitoring can provide information about wellbeing at a particular time. Continue routine antenatal care and prescribed treatment. Ask how to count or recognise your baby’s usual movements. If the balance of risks changes, your team may discuss birth timing and Induction of Labour.

Call your maternity unit promptly for reduced or changed fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, painful regular contractions, severe abdominal pain, severe headache, visual disturbance or sudden swelling with feeling unwell. These symptoms require direct assessment and should not be explained away by the scan finding. Follow local emergency instructions if symptoms are severe or the maternity team cannot be reached.

Ask whether the abdomen is the only measurement outside the expected range, how it compares with previous scans, and whether fluid or Doppler findings are reassuring. Ask when the next scan is due, which movement changes matter, and what would lead to continued observation or delivery.
