What should you know about IUGR and SGA?

A baby can be small because of family build and still be healthy. SGA is a size description compared with babies at the same stage of pregnancy. IUGR describes a concern about how growth is occurring or whether the placenta is supporting the baby adequately. The distinction cannot be made from the label alone. Clinicians consider growth over time, abdominal and head measurements, fluid, Doppler blood flow, movements and Fetal Heart Monitoring.

Keep scheduled reviews and ask how your baby’s measurements are changing rather than focusing on a single estimate. A Growth Scan may be repeated, and blood pressure or urine may be checked for pregnancy complications. Eat and rest according to your clinician’s advice, continue prescribed medicines, and avoid smoking, alcohol and non-prescribed substances. If monitoring becomes less reassuring, the team may discuss delivery planning, including Induction of Labour.

Contact maternity services promptly when fetal movements are reduced or noticeably different. Seek urgent review for bleeding, fluid leakage, regular painful contractions, severe pain, severe headache, vision changes, or sudden swelling with feeling unwell. These symptoms need assessment on their own; a small-baby label should never be used to dismiss them or to predict their cause.

Ask whether your baby is being described as SGA, suspected IUGR, or both, and what evidence supports that description. Ask about growth intervals, placenta and Doppler findings, movement guidance, and which changes would alter the timing or method of birth.
