What should you know about IUGR risk?

Short answer

IUGR risk means a baby may be growing more slowly than expected and needs individual assessment and monitoring.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the risk can involve

Fetal growth restriction, also called IUGR, describes growth that is less than expected during pregnancy. A smaller measurement does not by itself establish the reason or predict the outcome. Clinicians compare ultrasound measurements, the pregnancy dates, fluid around the baby and blood flow through the placenta. Some babies are constitutionally small and healthy, while others need closer observation because the placenta may not be delivering enough oxygen and nutrients.

How monitoring is planned

Keep every antenatal appointment and take prescribed medicines as directed. Your maternity team may arrange repeat growth scans to compare the baby’s pattern over time, along with checks of fluid and placental blood flow. Fetal heart monitoring can assess the baby’s response at a particular visit. If continuing the pregnancy becomes less reassuring than birth, the team may discuss timing and method of delivery, including induction of labour when appropriate.

When to contact maternity services

Contact your maternity unit promptly if your baby’s movements are reduced or change noticeably from the usual pattern. Seek urgent care for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, painful regular contractions, severe abdominal pain, severe headache with vision changes, or sudden swelling with feeling unwell. Do not wait for a scheduled scan when a warning sign appears; maternity staff can decide which assessment is needed.

Questions to ask

Ask which measurement prompted concern, whether the placenta and blood-flow findings are reassuring, how often monitoring is planned, and which movement changes should trigger a call. You can also ask what findings would change the delivery plan and where to go outside office hours.

Questions people ask

Does an IUGR risk label confirm a problem?

No. It signals a need to interpret measurements and wellbeing together, often with follow-up monitoring.

Can IUGR risk change the birth plan?

It can. The team may recommend continued observation or discuss birth if monitoring becomes concerning.
