IUGR and the placenta

Short answer
IUGR can be linked with reduced placental support, so clinicians assess growth and blood flow rather than judging the placenta alone.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How placental support matters
The placenta transfers oxygen and nutrients between you and your baby. When placental function or circulation is less effective, the baby may receive less support for growth. Other explanations are possible, and a small baby may simply be naturally small. Ultrasound can measure growth, amniotic fluid, and blood flow in selected vessels; these findings help show how the pregnancy is progressing. The placenta is not assessed from size alone.
Care when placental function is a concern
Attend the monitoring plan and report changes in fetal movements. Your team may arrange repeat Growth Scans, Doppler assessments, or Fetal Heart Monitoring. Take prescribed treatment as directed and discuss blood pressure or other medical conditions that could affect pregnancy care. If findings become less reassuring, clinicians may discuss the balance between continued monitoring and birth, including Induction of Labour when appropriate.
Warning signs during pregnancy
Contact your maternity unit promptly if your baby's movements are reduced or different from usual. Get urgent assessment for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, severe headache, visual disturbance, severe upper abdominal pain, or regular painful contractions. These symptoms require clinical assessment even if a previous scan was reassuring.
What to ask about the placenta
Ask whether blood flow is reassuring, how fluid and growth compare with earlier scans, whether your blood pressure needs closer review, what monitoring is planned, and which results would lead to a discussion about birth.

Questions people ask
Does a placental concern prove the placenta is failing?
No. It signals that the pregnancy needs clinical assessment; several findings are considered before conclusions are made.
Can I improve placental function myself?
There is no guaranteed home method to change placental function. Follow the care plan and discuss medicines, blood pressure, and symptoms with your maternity team.
