What should you know about IUGR and FGR?

How the structures involved in Fetal Growth Restriction differ from normal

Short answer

IUGR, also called fetal growth restriction or FGR, means a baby is smaller than expected or is not growing as expected during pregnancy; regular assessment helps the maternity team decide whether continued pregnancy or birth is safer.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What IUGR or FGR means

A small measurement does not always mean there is a health problem. Some babies are naturally small, while others grow less than expected because the placenta is not supplying enough oxygen and nutrients, or because of a maternal, placental, or fetal condition. Your clinician compares measurements with pregnancy dates and follows the pattern over time rather than relying on one result.

Assessment may include fundal-height checks, ultrasound measurements of the baby's head, abdomen, and thigh bone, fluid assessment, and blood-flow checks through the umbilical cord. The team may also review blood pressure, medical conditions, medicines, and the baby's movements. FGR can be identified at different stages of pregnancy, so the monitoring plan is individual.

What to do after a concern is raised

Keep every antenatal and scan appointment, because changes in growth, fluid, blood flow, and movement can alter the plan. Follow advice about checking your baby's usual movement pattern, and contact your maternity unit if movements become less frequent or feel different. Take prescribed medicines as directed and discuss smoking, alcohol, recreational drugs, nutrition, and any new symptoms openly; these details help clinicians plan safely.

There is no home treatment that makes a growth-restricted baby grow on demand. Management may involve closer surveillance, fetal heart monitoring, repeat growth scans, or planning birth when the baby is more likely to benefit from delivery. The timing and method depend on gestational age, scan findings, blood flow, movement, and your health.

When to seek urgent maternity care

Contact your maternity unit promptly if your baby's movements are reduced or changed, or if you cannot feel movements when you normally would. Seek urgent advice for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe or persistent abdominal pain, a severe headache, visual changes, sudden swelling, or feeling seriously unwell. Do not wait for the next scheduled scan when one of these symptoms occurs.

These symptoms can have several causes, but they need assessment during pregnancy. A clinician may check your blood pressure, baby's heartbeat, contractions, fluid, and other signs before deciding what happens next.

Questions for your doctor or midwife

Ask which measurement led to the concern, how your baby's growth compares with earlier scans, and whether blood flow or fluid levels are changing. You can also ask how often monitoring is needed, which movement changes should prompt a call, what would make birth advisable, and whether fetal heart monitoring, a growth scan, or induction of labour may be part of the plan.

Questions people ask

Does FGR always mean my baby is unwell?

No. Some babies are constitutionally small and remain well. Serial measurements, fluid, blood flow, movements, and fetal heart checks help the maternity team distinguish a small but healthy baby from growth that needs closer care.

Can fetal growth restriction be treated during pregnancy?

The underlying cause may guide care, but there is no home treatment that reliably speeds fetal growth. Clinicians focus on surveillance and choosing the safest timing and method of birth if the baby's wellbeing becomes a concern.

What happens if my baby is diagnosed with FGR?

You may have repeat growth scans, fluid and blood-flow assessments, fetal heart monitoring, and reviews of your health and baby's movements. The schedule and birth plan depend on the findings and stage of pregnancy.
