IUGR antenatal care: what should you know?

Antenatal means care during pregnancy before labour. When fetal growth restriction is suspected, clinicians build a picture over time rather than relying on one measurement. They may review ultrasound growth estimates, abdominal growth, amniotic fluid, placenta-related Doppler blood flow, fetal movements and fetal heart patterns. They may also monitor your blood pressure and ask about symptoms that can affect pregnancy care. A small measurement can describe a naturally small baby, while a slowing pattern or abnormal wellbeing checks may indicate a need for more active planning.

Keep antenatal appointments and bring questions about the purpose of each check. A growth scan compares size and fluid over time; fetal heart monitoring gives information about the baby during the assessment. Follow your team’s instructions about movement awareness and report a clear change rather than waiting for the next visit. Take prescribed medicines as directed and tell clinicians about other conditions or treatments. If monitoring becomes less reassuring, the team may discuss increased observation, induction of labour or another way to give birth.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for reduced or changed fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions or severe abdominal pain. Severe headache, visual changes, sudden swelling or feeling very unwell also need prompt assessment. These symptoms are urgent because of their own possible causes; they should not be judged by whether the last growth scan was reassuring.

Ask what type of growth restriction is suspected, how often you need a growth scan and whether blood-flow or fetal heart monitoring is planned. Ask which movement pattern is normal for your baby, which symptoms mean you should call, and what findings would change the antenatal schedule. Clarify who will coordinate care and how induction of labour would be considered if delivery becomes advisable.
