Short answer

Itchy skin on the top of the feet often reflects irritation, dermatitis, fungal infection, or eczema, and the pattern guides care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Dry feet carefully and rotate damp shoes and socks out of use

What it may mean

Redness, scaling, cracking, or itch between the toes can occur with athlete's foot. A rash shaped by the straps, lining, adhesive, or dye of a shoe may fit contact dermatitis. Tiny, intensely itchy fluid-filled blisters can occur with dyshidrotic eczema. Dry skin, sweating, friction, and repeated dampness can aggravate each pattern. Itch on the top of the feet may occur without changes on the soles, so examine both feet and the spaces between the toes.

A clinician may inspect the edges, nails, toe spaces, and footwear history before choosing treatment. Avoid sharing towels or footwear until a fungal cause has been considered.

What you can do now

Keep feet clean and dry, especially between the toes. Change damp socks, let shoes dry fully, and choose breathable footwear. Stop using a new shoe, insole, spray, or adhesive if the rash follows its contact pattern. Use a plain moisturiser on dry, unbroken skin, but avoid applying it between moist toes. Do not scratch or use steroid and antifungal products together without guidance, because the appearance can become harder to interpret.

When to seek care

Arrange medical review for spreading redness, increasing warmth, swelling, pus, fever, open cracks, or significant pain. Seek advice if the rash involves the nails, keeps returning, or does not improve after removing a suspected irritant. People with diabetes, reduced circulation, or reduced sensation should have foot changes assessed promptly.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the distribution fits athlete's foot, contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, or another cause; whether testing is needed; and which treatment is safe for the exact area. Ask how long to continue care and how to reduce recurrence.

Questions people ask

Can shoes cause itching on the top of the feet?

Yes. Materials, dyes, adhesives, friction, heat, or sweat can irritate skin or trigger contact dermatitis.

When might an antifungal treatment be considered?

A clinician may consider topical antifungal treatment when the pattern suggests a fungal infection, especially with scaling or toe-space involvement.
