Itchy tongue and sore throat: what to know

A scratchy mouth and throat after a new food, medicine, toothpaste, or mouthwash may reflect irritation or an allergic reaction. Allergic rhinitis can cause mouth breathing and a dry, tickly throat. A common cold, influenza, COVID-19, tonsillitis, or strep throat may cause soreness with other features such as cough, fever, swollen glands, or difficulty swallowing. Acid reflux can irritate the throat, especially after meals or when lying down. The combination alone cannot identify the cause.

Sip water or warm fluids, choose soft foods, and avoid smoke, alcohol, spicy foods, and anything that clearly triggers the itch. Do not scratch the tongue. Gargling with warm salt water may soothe an adult throat. Wash your hands and avoid sharing utensils if a respiratory infection seems possible. A pharmacist can advise whether a suitable lozenge or allergy treatment fits your age, medicines, and health conditions.

Seek emergency help for swelling of the tongue, lips, or throat; wheezing; trouble breathing; faintness; or rapidly worsening symptoms after food or medicine. Arrange prompt medical assessment for severe swallowing difficulty, dehydration, a high or persistent fever, a rash, one-sided throat swelling, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.
