Itchy throat during a cold

Viral inflammation can make the throat lining sensitive. Mucus from a blocked nose may drain backward and create a tickle, while congestion encourages mouth breathing that dries the throat. Coughing can then add more irritation. A common cold may also bring sneezing, runny nose, hoarseness, tiredness or a mild temperature.

An itchy throat can also occur with allergic rhinitis, so timing helps: cold symptoms tend to develop together, while allergy symptoms may return around dust, pollen or another exposure. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause.

Rest, drink water regularly and choose warm or cool fluids according to what feels soothing. Saline nasal spray or rinsing can help clear mucus; use clean water as directed. Keep away from smoke and strong fragrances, and use humidified air if your room is dry. Ask a pharmacist about suitable symptom relief if you take regular medicines or have a chronic condition.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, throat swelling, confusion, severe dehydration or inability to swallow saliva. Contact a clinician if symptoms become severe, improve and then clearly worsen, include chest pain or wheezing, or continue without improvement beyond the expected cold period.
