Itchy throat and spitting up blood

A small streak can come from an irritated nose, gums, mouth, or throat, especially after forceful coughing, repeated throat clearing, or dry air. Blood mixed with phlegm may come from the airways, while blood after vomiting may come from the digestive tract. An itchy throat can occur with allergic rhinitis or a cold, but those conditions do not by themselves explain every episode of bleeding.

Record whether the blood is bright red or dark, mixed with mucus or vomit, and whether it followed coughing, nosebleeding, brushing, or eating. Do not assume the source from colour alone.

Sit upright, spit blood into a tissue or container rather than swallowing it, and note how much is present and whether it recurs. Avoid smoking, alcohol, vigorous throat clearing, and strenuous activity while arranging advice. Do not take aspirin or other blood-thinning medicine for this symptom unless the prescriber tells you to continue it; never stop a prescribed medicine without advice. A clinician may need to inspect your nose, mouth, throat, and chest.

Call emergency services for more than a small streak, ongoing or repeated bleeding, clots, breathlessness, chest pain, faintness, confusion, or blue lips. Seek same-day medical assessment even if the bleeding stops when the source is unclear, you take anticoagulants, or you have a significant cough or fever. Severe throat swelling or inability to swallow saliva is also an emergency.
