Itchy throat, sore throat and cough

A common cold may cause a cough alongside congestion, throat soreness, tiredness, or a raised temperature. Allergic rhinitis can cause an itchy throat when mucus drains from the nose, often with sneezing or itchy eyes; the cough may be dry. Smoke, dust, perfume, dry air, or frequent talking can irritate the throat and trigger coughing. Reflux can also irritate the throat, particularly after meals or when lying down, and may leave a sour taste or hoarse voice.

The sound of a cough alone does not identify its cause. Note whether it is dry or brings up mucus, what triggers it, and whether it affects sleep or breathing.

Drink regularly, rest, and avoid smoke, vaping, dust, and strong fragrances. Warm fluids may soothe the throat. Saline nasal care can reduce mucus-related irritation when congestion is present. A pharmacist can advise on suitable cough or allergy treatment after checking your age, pregnancy status, medical conditions, and regular medicines. Avoid combining products with the same ingredient and do not use someone else’s prescription.

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, or swelling of the tongue or throat. Seek prompt clinical advice if the cough is worsening, you cannot keep fluids down, you become dehydrated, or a fever persists. Medical review is also sensible when cough interrupts sleep repeatedly, follows a new medicine, or does not settle as expected.
