Itchy throat with a slight cough: what to know

A tickling cough can happen when the throat lining is irritated by mucus draining from the nose. Allergic rhinitis may cause this drainage alongside sneezing, nasal itch or watery eyes. A common cold can begin with throat irritation and a mild cough, then bring congestion or tiredness. Smoke, vaping aerosol, dust, dry air and strong fragrances may also trigger a cough without an infection. Cough that becomes frequent, produces concerning symptoms or follows choking needs a different assessment.

Drink fluids, try a warm drink, and avoid smoke, vaping aerosol and dusty or heavily scented spaces. Saline nasal care may help when drainage is part of the pattern.
