Itchy throat, runny nose and sneezing: what to know

Allergic rhinitis commonly presents with repeated sneezing, a watery runny nose, nasal itch and an itchy throat, especially after exposure to dust, pollen, mould or animal dander. House dust mites can trigger symptoms indoors. A common cold may also cause throat irritation and a runny nose, with tiredness, blocked nose or a cough developing as the illness progresses. Symptoms alone cannot identify the cause. Food allergy is more concerning when symptoms begin soon after eating and include hives, lip or tongue swelling, vomiting, wheezing or breathing difficulty.

Notice when symptoms start and what was nearby, such as dust, cleaning products, outdoor air or a particular meal. Reduce suspected triggers, wash your hands, drink fluids and try warm drinks or saline nasal rinsing if comfortable. Avoid smoke and strong fragrances, which can further irritate the throat.
