Itchy throat without a cough: what to know

The throat may feel itchy when its surface is dry or mildly inflamed. Dust, smoke, fragrances, air conditioning, mouth breathing, and dehydration are common irritants. Allergic rhinitis can cause an itchy throat with sneezing, watery eyes, or a blocked nose even when the lungs are unaffected. Notice whether the sensation follows a place, season, meal, medicine, or activity. A food-related episode with hives or swelling is different from a mild irritation after sleeping in dry air and needs a faster response.
