Itchy throat and dry cough: what medicine may help

A dry cough can be triggered by an irritated throat, mucus draining from the nose, allergy, a recent common cold, reflux, smoke, or some medicines. An allergy pattern may include sneezing, watery eyes, or a blocked nose. Post-nasal drip may feel like mucus or a constant tickle. Reflux can be worse after meals or when lying down. Cough with fever, chest pain, breathlessness, or feeling very unwell needs a different assessment. An itchy throat with dry cough does not identify one cause on its own.

Sip water, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use saline nasal care when nasal mucus is part of the pattern. Honey may soothe a cough for some adults and older children, but it is not suitable for infants. Ask a pharmacist to check any cough, cold, or allergy product against your age, pregnancy status, medical conditions, and current medicines. Treating an allergy or nasal cause may help more than suppressing the cough alone. Follow labels and avoid combining products with overlapping ingredients.

Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, sudden throat swelling, faintness, or coughing blood. Arrange prompt review for chest pain, persistent fever, wheeze, dehydration, confusion, or a cough that keeps worsening. A cough that lingers or repeatedly returns also deserves a clinician’s assessment.
