Itchy throat from post-nasal drip

The nose normally makes mucus, but allergy, a cold, sinus irritation, or dry air can change its amount or thickness. When it runs towards the back of the throat, it may cause a tickle, cough, hoarseness, a need to clear the throat, or a sensation of something stuck. Allergic rhinitis often brings sneezing and an itchy or blocked nose. A cold is more likely when the symptoms began with feeling unwell and change over a short period. Reflux and throat dryness can feel similar, so the symptom pattern matters.

Drink regularly, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and try not to repeatedly scrape or clear the throat. Saline nasal spray or rinse may loosen mucus; use products exactly as directed and ask a pharmacist about safe water and device use for a rinse. Keeping the sleeping area free from dust may help when indoor allergens are suspected. If symptoms recur, a clinician can examine the nose and throat and discuss allergy medication or treatment for another nasal cause.

Seek urgent help for breathing trouble, throat or tongue swelling, inability to swallow saliva, or sudden severe symptoms after food or medicine. Arrange a prompt appointment for blood, high fever, severe facial pain, one-sided throat pain, persistent hoarseness, or symptoms that keep returning without an obvious trigger.
