Itchy throat for days: causes and next steps

Symptoms that follow a runny nose, tiredness, or cough can occur with the common cold. Sneezing, watery eyes, and clear nasal discharge suggest an allergic pattern, including allergic rhinitis. If symptoms appear mainly at home or around bedding, house dust mites may be an exposure. Air conditioning, low humidity, smoke, and cleaning products can irritate the throat for days. Food allergy usually has a clear relationship to eating and may cause hives, swelling, vomiting, wheezing, or tightness rather than an isolated mild itch.

Keep drinking fluids and choose foods that do not scrape or sting the throat. Reduce exposure to smoke, incense, perfume, and dusty rooms; ventilate the space when practical. Saline nasal spray can ease dryness or mucus-related irritation. Note the timing of meals, places, activities, and other symptoms. Get emergency help if breathing becomes difficult, the throat feels tight, saliva cannot be swallowed, or the lips, tongue, or face swell. Faintness or rapidly worsening symptoms after food, a sting, or medicine also need immediate help. Contact a clinician if the itch is worsening, lasts beyond the expected recovery of a cold, repeatedly returns, or comes with fever, severe pain, or trouble swallowing.
