Itchy throat that feels like coughing

Mucus draining from the nose can tickle the back of the throat and create a cough-like urge. Allergic rhinitis may also cause sneezing, nasal blockage, and watery eyes, while house dust mite exposure can make indoor symptoms recur. A common cold may add a runny nose, hoarseness, or general tiredness. Smoke, air conditioning, perfume, and dehydration can irritate the throat without infection. If symptoms begin soon after food and include hives, swelling, wheezing, vomiting, or tightness, food allergy is a medical emergency concern.

Drink regularly, choose warm or cool fluids according to comfort, and avoid smoke and scented sprays. Try not to repeatedly clear the throat, because this can maintain irritation; take a sip or swallow instead. Saline nasal spray may help when nasal mucus is contributing. If an allergy pattern is clear, a pharmacist can help you choose an allergy medication that fits your age, pregnancy status, and existing medicines. Rest your voice if talking worsens the sensation.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, severe wheezing, throat tightness, inability to swallow saliva, faintness, or sudden swelling of the face, lips, or tongue. Arrange a clinician visit if the cough urge persists, disrupts sleep, causes chest pain, or comes with fever or worsening swallowing pain.
