Itchy throat with a deep cough: what it can mean

A cough may sound deep when mucus or inflammation involves the larger breathing tubes, although sound cannot show exactly where the problem is. A recent cold, nasal drainage, smoke, dust or strong fragrance can irritate the airway. Allergic rhinitis may cause throat tickling and drainage, while wheezing or repeated night cough can point to airway sensitivity. The combination does not diagnose one condition.

Rest, drink fluids, and avoid smoke, vaping, dust and cold air if they trigger coughing. Sit upright during a coughing episode and use gentle breaths once it settles. Note whether the cough is dry or productive, what brings it on, and whether activity or lying down makes it worse. A clinician or pharmacist can guide treatment after considering your other medicines and health conditions.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, faintness or sudden swelling of the mouth and throat. Arrange prompt care for chest pain, coughing blood, significant wheezing, dehydration, or a cough that is clearly worsening. Medical review is also sensible when the cough persists, repeatedly returns, or interferes with sleep and normal activity.
