Itchy throat, cough and phlegm: medicine guidance

Phlegm is mucus from the airways or drainage from the nose. A common cold may cause a cough, throat irritation and changing mucus as the illness develops. Allergic rhinitis can drip mucus down the back of the throat without a fever. The colour or thickness of mucus alone does not show whether antibiotics are needed. Other possibilities include smoke exposure, asthma, reflux or an infection that needs examination.

Drink enough fluid to keep mucus easier to clear, rest your voice, and avoid smoking, vaping and dusty air. Warm drinks or honey may soothe an adult throat; honey is not suitable for babies. Ask a pharmacist to check any cough or cold product against your age, pregnancy status, long-term conditions and current medicines. Allergy medication may help when nasal allergy is the clear pattern, but it is not a universal treatment for phlegm.

Get urgent help for breathlessness, severe wheezing, blue or grey lips, confusion, coughing blood, or swelling that affects swallowing. Contact a clinician when phlegm and cough are worsening, fever persists, chest pain develops, or symptoms keep returning. Children, older adults and people with lung disease may need earlier advice.
