Itchy throat, cough and post-nasal drip

Mucus from the nose normally moves towards the throat without being noticed. Extra mucus, thicker secretions, or nasal swelling can make that flow feel like a lump, tickle, or coating. Allergic rhinitis may bring sneezing and clear drainage, while a common cold often adds congestion, fatigue, or a sore throat. House dust mite allergy can cause symptoms that recur indoors.

Reflux, dry air, smoke, and some nasal problems can also irritate the throat, so drainage is not the only possible explanation.

Drink fluids regularly, try a saline nasal rinse made with sterile or previously boiled and cooled water, and sleep with your head slightly raised. Avoid smoke and strong scents. A pharmacist or clinician can discuss whether an allergy medicine is suitable; treatment should match the cause rather than simply suppressing the cough.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, throat swelling, confusion, faintness, or blue lips. Contact a clinician if you cough up blood, have chest pain, severe weakness, persistent fever, or symptoms that keep returning. Assessment is also sensible when nasal blockage is one-sided, discharge is foul-smelling, or facial pain is pronounced.

Ask whether the drainage is more consistent with allergy, a cold, reflux, or another nasal problem; whether a nasal spray or antihistamine is appropriate; and how long to try the plan before review.
