Itchy throat, cough and fever: what to know

A common cold or another respiratory infection can inflame the throat and trigger coughing, while fever reflects the body’s response to infection. Allergic rhinitis usually causes itching and sneezing without fever, so fever makes infection more relevant, although symptoms can overlap. A dry cough may come from throat irritation; a mucus-producing cough can occur as airways clear secretions. The pattern does not identify a specific infection by itself.

Consider when the fever began, whether it is improving, whether you can drink, and whether you have shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, or unusual drowsiness. Mention medical conditions and medicines that may affect your risk.

Rest, drink enough fluid to keep your urine pale, and choose soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Use a thermometer consistently and follow the label for any fever medicine; check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, treating a child, or taking other medicines. Avoid antibiotics left from a previous illness, because they do not treat every cause of cough and fever. Reduce close contact while feverish and wash your hands.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, faintness, inability to swallow saliva, or sudden swelling of the throat or face. Arrange prompt medical review if fever persists or returns, drinking becomes difficult, the cough is worsening, or you feel markedly weaker. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with long-term conditions may need earlier advice.
