Itchy throat and the common cold

People with a Common Cold may notice throat irritation alongside sneezing, runny or blocked nose, cough, tiredness or a mild temperature. The throat can itch as inflamed surfaces react to mucus and repeated coughing. Symptoms often change over the course of the illness, so a single sensation cannot distinguish a cold from another cause.

Allergic Rhinitis may cause a similar itch with watery eyes and repeated sneezing, often linked to a setting or season. A Food Allergy is more concerning when symptoms begin soon after eating and include hives, swelling, vomiting, wheeze or breathing difficulty. Smoke, dry air and reflux are other possibilities.
