Itchy throat and wet cough: what to know

A common cold may inflame the throat and produce mucus that is coughed up. Allergic rhinitis can cause mucus to drain from the nose into the throat, creating repeated throat clearing or cough without a typical fever. Smoke, dry air, and strong fragrances can irritate the airway. A food allergy is more urgent when coughing begins soon after eating with hives, swelling, wheezing, vomiting, or dizziness. The colour or amount of mucus alone does not establish the cause.

Drink enough fluid to keep secretions easier to clear, rest, and avoid smoking or smoky rooms. Warm drinks may soothe the throat. Wash hands and cover coughs to reduce spread if a cold is possible. Notice breathing effort, chest discomfort, fever, the duration of symptoms, and whether mucus is coming from the chest or from nasal drainage. A pharmacist can explain suitable symptom relief, while a clinician can assess a cough that is persistent or changing.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, coughing blood, or sudden throat swelling. Arrange prompt medical advice for chest pain, dehydration, worsening fever, wheezing, or a cough that is not improving. People with asthma, significant lung disease, or a weakened immune system may need earlier assessment.
