Itchy Throat and Nose Allergies: What to Know

Allergic rhinitis may cause an itchy nose, throat or eyes, repeated sneezing, clear runny mucus and congestion. Symptoms can appear after pollen, dust mites, mould, pets or another airborne trigger reaches the nose. They may ease away from the exposure and return in the same environment. A cold can also irritate the throat and nose, but it more often includes feeling unwell, cough or fever. Food allergy tends to follow eating a particular food and may cause mouth itching, hives, swelling, vomiting or breathing symptoms.

The symptom pattern does not identify the trigger by itself. A clinician can use your history and examination, and may discuss testing when the pattern warrants it.

Track where and when symptoms happen, including bedroom exposure, outdoor activity and meals. Reduce dust and smoke exposure, keep windows closed when outdoor triggers are troublesome, and rinse the nose with saline if appropriate. Wash hands and change clothes after heavy outdoor exposure. A pharmacist or doctor can advise on allergy medication and how to use it safely. Avoid taking several combination cold or allergy products together unless a professional confirms the ingredients are suitable.

Call for urgent help if the throat feels tight, breathing is difficult, swallowing becomes hard, the tongue or lips swell, you feel faint, or hives spread quickly. Arrange a review if symptoms interfere with sleep, work or exercise, cause recurrent sinus or ear problems, or remain unexplained despite avoiding likely triggers. A review is especially useful when symptoms begin after a food or medicine.
