Itchy Throat and Nasal Drip: What to Know

Nasal drip happens when mucus moves from the back of the nose towards the throat. This can produce a tickle, throat clearing, hoarseness or cough. Allergic rhinitis often presents with an itchy nose or eyes, repeated sneezing and thin, clear drainage. A common cold may begin with throat irritation and later bring congestion, cough, body aches or feeling unwell. Dust mites, pollen and other airborne allergens can cause symptoms that return in a particular setting. Food allergy can cause mouth or throat itching after eating and may include swelling, hives, vomiting or breathing changes.

The colour or thickness of mucus alone does not establish the cause. A clinician considers the timing, associated symptoms and examination findings.

Drink enough fluid to keep the throat comfortable, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and consider a saline nasal spray or rinse if you can use it safely. Wash hands and avoid sharing drinks when a cold seems likely. Keep a brief record of exposure, meals, sleep and symptoms. A pharmacist can discuss allergy medication, including whether it is suitable with pregnancy, chronic conditions or other medicines. Do not start antibiotics for a suspected cold without medical advice.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, inability to swallow saliva, sudden tongue or lip swelling, faintness or rapidly spreading hives. Seek a prompt review for severe one-sided throat pain, dehydration, persistent fever, facial pain with worsening symptoms, blood in mucus, or symptoms that do not settle or repeatedly disrupt sleep. Examination may identify allergy, infection, reflux or another source of irritation.
