Itchy throat and cough during pregnancy

Allergic rhinitis may cause throat itch, sneezing, and mucus draining from the nose. A common cold may add congestion, tiredness, or fever. Dry indoor air, smoke, and fragrances can irritate the throat during pregnancy just as they can at other times. Pregnancy can also make nasal congestion more noticeable, so symptoms may overlap. The presence of an itchy throat does not establish a specific diagnosis. Note when the cough began, whether you have fever or wheezing, and whether symptoms follow dust, pollen, animals, or a food.

Drink fluids, choose warm drinks, rest, and avoid smoke and strong scents. A humidifier may help when the air is dry; clean it as directed to prevent buildup. Saline nasal spray or a rinse may ease nasal drainage when used correctly. Do not start, stop, or combine cough, cold, or allergy products without checking with your maternity clinician, doctor, or pharmacist, because suitability depends on the product, dose, trimester, and your health history. Ask specifically about any allergy medication rather than relying on a general label.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, blue lips, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or inability to swallow. Contact your maternity team or clinician promptly for high fever, chest pain, significant wheezing, dehydration, coughing blood, or a cough that is worsening. A review is also sensible if symptoms are persistent, disrupt sleep, or occur with reduced fetal movement later in pregnancy, following your maternity service's advice.
