Itchy throat after taking medicine: what should you know?

A tablet can irritate the throat if it is swallowed with too little fluid or remains lodged briefly. A liquid medicine, flavouring or inactive ingredient may also cause local irritation. More concerning features include itching that starts soon after a dose with hives, facial swelling, wheezing, vomiting, dizziness or tightness in the throat. A Food Allergy or another unrelated trigger can occur at the same time, while Allergic Rhinitis may explain itch with sneezing and nasal drainage. Do not assume every symptom after a dose is an allergy, but treat sudden airway symptoms seriously.

Write down the medicine name, strength, dose, time taken and all symptoms. Contact the prescriber or pharmacist promptly for advice before taking another dose, particularly if the itch began soon after use. Do not deliberately repeat a suspected medicine to test the reaction, and do not give it to another person. Swallow future tablets with enough water and remain upright if a clinician says the medicine is still suitable. Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue, lips or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, wheezing, faintness, confusion or rapidly spreading hives. Urgent assessment is also needed if symptoms are progressing after the dose. For an isolated mild itch that settles, arrange a medication review so the suspected product and safer alternatives can be documented. Keep the packaging available for the clinician.
