Itchy throat after flu: what should you know?

Flu can leave the throat lining sensitive even after fever and body aches settle. Breathing through the mouth, coughing, indoor air conditioning and dehydration may add to the scratchy sensation. Mucus draining from the nose can tickle the back of the throat. A new pattern of sneezing, watery eyes or clear nasal discharge may fit Allergic Rhinitis, while renewed fever, worsening cough or marked fatigue may suggest another infection such as Common Cold. An itchy throat by itself does not identify the cause.

Sip water regularly and choose warm fluids if they feel soothing. Honey in a warm drink may calm an adult throat; do not give honey to an infant. Use a humidifier that is cleaned as directed, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and rest your voice. Saline nasal spray or rinsing can reduce mucus reaching the throat. Ask a pharmacist whether Allergy Medication is suitable if allergy symptoms are present, especially if you take other medicines or have a long-term condition.

Arrange medical advice if the irritation is worsening, keeps returning, or is accompanied by persistent fever, chest pain, breathing difficulty, dehydration, severe weakness or trouble swallowing. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, wheezing, faintness or rapidly developing hives. A clinician can examine the throat and chest and decide whether testing or another treatment is needed.
