Itchy Sunburn Treatment: What Helps and When to Seek Care

How the structures involved in Sunburn differ from normal

Short answer

Itchy sunburn treatment focuses on cooling the skin, restoring moisture, reducing irritation, and avoiding further sun exposure while the burn heals.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First step
Cool the skin and leave direct sun.
Moisture
Use a plain, fragrance-free emollient on intact skin.
Blisters
Leave them intact and seek advice if extensive or severe.
Avoid
Scratching, peeling, ice directly on skin, and fragranced products.

What helps an itchy sunburn

Itching can appear as inflammation settles and the outer layer becomes dry or begins to peel. Treatment is usually aimed at comfort and skin protection rather than removing the damaged surface.

What an itchy sunburn means

A sunburn is an inflammatory reaction after ultraviolet exposure. Skin may feel hot, tender, tight, red, or itchy, and later it may peel. Small blisters can occur when the burn is more substantial; do not puncture them because the intact skin helps protect the area.

Itching does not give a reliable measure of the depth of a burn. New or worsening discomfort after the initial exposure, spreading redness, or symptoms affecting your general health deserve closer attention.

How to care for the skin

Move out of direct sun and use a cool, damp cloth or a cool shower for short periods. Avoid ice placed directly on the skin, which can add irritation. Pat dry rather than rubbing.

Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser or an emollient while the skin is still slightly damp. Reapply when tightness returns. Choose loose, soft clothing and drink fluids if you feel thirsty. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral anti-itch medicine is suitable for you and whether it fits with your other medicines.

Do not scratch, peel loose skin, or break blisters. Avoid fragranced products, harsh scrubs, and topical products containing local anaesthetics if they sting or cause a rash. Keep the area covered from sunlight with clothing; sunscreen is for protected, intact skin and does not replace staying out of the sun while the burn is active.

A clinician may sometimes recommend a short course of a topical corticosteroid for selected inflammatory symptoms, but this is not appropriate for every burn or every body area. Use it only as directed, particularly on the face, skin folds, or broken skin.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent medical advice for extensive blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, signs of infection such as increasing warmth or pus, or a burn involving the eyes, face, hands, genitals, or a large area. Medical advice is also appropriate after sun exposure if you develop fever, chills, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, fainting, or difficulty keeping fluids down.

Children, older adults, and people with significant medical conditions may need earlier assessment. Arrange a review if symptoms are getting worse rather than settling, or if the skin is not improving as expected.

Questions for your doctor or pharmacist

Ask which moisturiser and anti-itch option suit your skin, whether any blistered areas need a dressing, and whether a topical corticosteroid is suitable for the affected location. Mention medicines, allergies, pregnancy, or conditions that may alter treatment choices.

Questions people ask

Can I scratch an itchy sunburn?

Try cooling and moisturising instead. Scratching can damage the surface, worsen irritation, and introduce infection, especially where skin is peeling or blistered.

Should I use a steroid cream for an itchy sunburn?

A clinician may recommend a topical corticosteroid in selected cases, but do not use one routinely on a sunburn without advice. The product and body site matter, particularly when skin is broken.

When is an itchy sunburn an emergency?
