Itchy Sunburn: What It Means and What Helps

Short answer
An itchy sunburn reflects inflamed, healing skin; cool compresses, gentle moisturising, fluids, and sun avoidance can help, while blistering or severe illness needs medical advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why a sunburn itches
Ultraviolet exposure injures surface skin cells and triggers inflammation. Redness, warmth, tenderness, tightness, and itch may appear after the exposure and can continue as damaged skin dries and peels. Peeling is part of the skin’s renewal process; pulling flakes away can expose fragile skin. Sunburn can affect any exposed area, including the scalp, ears, lips, shoulders, and feet.
Soothing an itchy sunburn
Move out of the sun and use a cool, damp cloth or a cool shower for comfort. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp; Emollient Therapy can be discussed if dryness is persistent. Drink fluids, wear loose soft clothing, and avoid scratching, ice directly on skin, petroleum-heavy products on hot skin, and further sun exposure. Do not break blisters. A clinician may advise medicine for inflammation in selected cases; do not apply Topical Corticosteroids without guidance.
Warning signs
Seek medical advice for large or numerous blisters, severe swelling, worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, chills, dizziness, vomiting, confusion, or signs of dehydration. Get urgent help for fainting, difficulty breathing, or inability to keep fluids down. A burn involving the eyes, mouth, genitals, or a large area also merits prompt assessment.
Questions for a clinician
How extensive is the burn? What can I safely use for the itch? Should any blistered area be dressed? Which symptoms would mean the burn is infected or causing heat illness?

Questions people ask
Why does sunburn itch when it starts peeling?
Drying and peeling skin can increase tightness and stimulate itch as the damaged surface is shed.
Can I put moisturiser on an itchy sunburn?
A plain, fragrance-free moisturiser can support comfort; stop if it stings and seek advice if the burn is blistered or severe.
