Short answer

Itchy, smelly feet often reflect moisture and skin changes between the toes, but the exact cause needs attention to the pattern.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Clues on the feet

Peeling, cracking, or soggy skin between the toes is common with athlete's foot. Tiny deep-seated blisters on the soles or sides can occur with dyshidrotic eczema. Burning or redness after a new shoe, sock, detergent, or foot product may suggest contact dermatitis. Odour comes from moisture and microorganisms breaking down sweat; it does not by itself prove a fungal infection. One foot can look different from the other, and several problems can overlap.

Keep the skin dry and protected

Wash gently, dry carefully between the toes, change damp socks, and alternate shoes so they can air out. Choose breathable footwear and avoid sharing towels or shoes. Do not scratch, peel loose skin, or apply fragranced products to cracked areas. If the pattern fits athlete's foot, a pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a topical antifungal treatment is suitable and how long to use it. Stop and seek advice if a product causes marked burning or a worsening rash.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, increasing pain, fever, or red streaks. People with diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, or a weakened immune system should seek advice early for breaks in foot skin. Get urgent help for rapidly worsening swelling or severe illness. See a clinician when the odour and itch persist despite careful drying and appropriate treatment, or when nails become thickened or discoloured.

Questions for your doctor

Does the skin look more like athlete's foot, eczema, or contact dermatitis? Should I use an antifungal, and where should it be applied? Could the footwear or detergent be contributing? What should I do about cracks, nail changes, or recurrent episodes?

Questions people ask

Does foot odour always mean athlete's foot?

No. Moisture, sweat, footwear, bacterial overgrowth, eczema, and fungal infection can all contribute to odour. Peeling or cracking helps guide the assessment.

Can I use moisturiser between my toes?

Heavy moisture between the toes can worsen sogginess, so ask a clinician or pharmacist which product is appropriate for the affected area.
