What should you know about an itchy, sore throat and cough?

A common cold can irritate the throat and airways, while influenza and COVID-19 may add fever, aches, marked tiredness or a dry cough. Allergic rhinitis can cause throat tickling when mucus drains from the nose. Acid reflux may provoke a recurring cough, hoarseness or throat irritation, especially after meals or when lying down. Tonsillitis and strep throat can cause a painful throat, but cough and runny-nose symptoms may point more toward a viral illness than strep.

Glandular fever is another possibility when a severe sore throat comes with prolonged exhaustion and swollen glands. Symptoms overlap, so the pattern and examination matter; an itchy throat does not identify one condition by itself.

Drink regularly, rest, and avoid smoke, vaping, strong fragrances and voice strain. Warm fluids or soothing lozenges may reduce irritation for some people. Do not use antibiotics left from an earlier illness.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, inability to swallow saliva, severe dehydration, confusion, chest pain, or rapidly increasing swelling in the throat. Testing may be needed for selected infections, and treatment depends on the result and examination.
