Itchy skin with bumps after scratching

Physical pressure can make some people's skin form temporary raised lines or welts. This pattern fits a form of Hives when the marks arise soon after rubbing and fade, move, or change. Atopic Dermatitis and Contact Dermatitis more often leave ongoing itch with dryness, scale, redness, or a defined exposure pattern. Scabies may cause intense itch with small bumps and commonly affects several household members, while infection may bring tenderness, warmth, crusting, or discharge. Timing, duration, location, and whether marks remain are more informative than colour alone.

Try not to scratch; cool compresses, loose clothing, and a fragrance-free moisturiser may calm irritated skin. Keep nails short and avoid rough towels, hot showers, and newly introduced products until the pattern is clearer. Take a photo when the bumps are visible and record how quickly they appear and fade. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine or another treatment is suitable for you, especially during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or when you take other medicines.

Get emergency help if bumps or hives come with swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, breathing difficulty, dizziness, or faintness. Seek prompt clinical advice if the lesions are painful, blistering, bruising, infected-looking, lasting unusually long, or accompanied by fever. A review is also sensible when itch is severe, widespread, recurrent, or affecting sleep.
