Itchy skin under breasts during pregnancy

The fold beneath the breast can stay warm and damp, especially as breast tissue changes. Sweat and rubbing may leave the skin red, tender, or prickly. A new bra, detergent, fabric, body wash, or cream can trigger contact dermatitis. Eczema can cause itch with dryness or scaling, while a skin yeast infection may produce a bright red, sore rash with small spots near its edge. Hives tend to form raised areas that come and go. These patterns overlap, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Pregnancy can also make skin more sensitive to products and heat.

Gently wash the fold with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat it completely dry. Choose a supportive, breathable bra and change out of damp clothing. A cool, clean compress can reduce the urge to scratch. Avoid scrubbing, fragranced products, and applying leftover steroid or antifungal cream without checking that it is suitable during pregnancy. Keep nails short and press or tap rather than scratch. If symptoms persist, a clinician can distinguish irritation from conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, or Skin Yeast Infection and recommend pregnancy-appropriate treatment.

Arrange a prompt clinical review if the area is increasingly painful, hot, swollen, cracked, bleeding, or producing fluid, or if redness is spreading. Seek urgent help for facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or widespread rapidly developing hives. Contact your maternity team about severe generalised itching, particularly if it is strongest on the palms or soles or is disturbing sleep, because pregnancy-related causes outside the skin need consideration.

Ask whether the rash looks more like friction, eczema, contact irritation, or infection; which cleanser, moisturiser, or medicine is appropriate in pregnancy; and whether severe or widespread itching warrants blood tests or maternity review.
