Short answer

Itchy swollen feet can have a skin-related cause, but new or one-sided swelling needs assessment for infection, circulation problems, or another medical issue.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Compare
Check whether swelling, warmth, colour, and itch are equal on both sides.
Protect
Use roomy footwear and keep skin between the toes clean and dry.

The key point

Itchy swollen feet can have a skin-related cause, but new or one-sided swelling needs assessment for infection, circulation problems, or another medical issue. Note whether both feet are affected, whether the skin is hot or painful, and whether swelling changes after rest or elevation.

What may be happening

Contact dermatitis from footwear, dye, adhesive, or detergent can cause an itchy rash. Atopic dermatitis may be dry and inflamed, while a yeast infection can affect moist areas between toes. Hives can swell and itch suddenly. Scabies is worth considering when night-time itching affects other household members. Swelling with warmth, tenderness, spreading redness, or a wound may indicate infection rather than simple dryness.

Both feet may swell after prolonged standing or with some medical conditions, but a clinician must interpret the full picture. A single swollen foot, especially with calf pain or warmth, deserves prompt advice.

Until you are assessed

Remove tight shoes and new foot products, wash gently, dry carefully between the toes, and use a bland moisturiser on dry intact skin. Rest with the feet supported if that is comfortable, and avoid scratching or puncturing blisters. Do not tightly bandage a swollen foot or use compression garments unless a clinician has advised them. Check both feet for cracks, wounds, colour change, and loss of sensation.

Urgent warning signs

Seek urgent help for sudden swelling with breathing difficulty, chest pain, faintness, facial swelling, or widespread hives. Obtain prompt medical assessment for one-sided swelling, a hot painful foot, rapidly spreading redness, fever, blue or pale toes, severe numbness, or inability to walk. If you have diabetes, circulation disease, or an open foot wound, contact your care team early.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the swelling appears skin-related, infectious, vascular, or medication-related; whether you need an examination or testing; and which creams or footwear changes are suitable. Mention recent travel, long immobility, new medicines, injury, and any pregnancy.

Questions people ask

Should I massage a swollen itchy foot?

Avoid vigorous massage until a clinician has considered infection or a circulation problem, particularly when swelling is one-sided or painful.

Can footwear cause an itchy foot rash?

Yes. Materials, dyes, adhesives, sweat, and friction can irritate or inflame foot skin, so note any link with a particular pair.
