Itchy skin rash during pregnancy: what to know

An itchy skin rash during pregnancy needs a careful look because irritation, eczema, hives, infection, and pregnancy-related conditions can look alike. The timing, location, appearance, medicines, and other symptoms help a clinician decide what is safe to use.

Dryness and stretching can make the abdomen, breasts, or limbs itchy. New soap, detergent, fragrance, fabric, or jewellery can trigger contact dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis may flare with dry, inflamed patches, while hives cause raised, changeable welts. Scabies often causes marked night-time itching and may affect close contacts. A yeast infection is more likely in warm, moist folds and can cause redness or soreness.

A rash is not enough to identify the cause. Mention whether the palms or soles itch, whether the itch is severe without much rash, and whether there is yellowing of the skin, dark urine, or pale stools, as these details can change the urgency of assessment.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser often, especially after a short lukewarm wash. Choose loose cotton clothing, keep nails short, and use a cool damp cloth rather than scratching. Stop newly introduced scented products and note whether a food, medicine, or product preceded the rash. Do not start oral medicines, steroid creams, or herbal products without checking their pregnancy suitability with a pharmacist, obstetric clinician, or dermatologist.

Contact your maternity team promptly for intense or widespread itching, itching of the palms or soles, or a new rash that is rapidly changing. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, fever, severe pain, or a rash involving the eyes or mouth. Arrange a clinical review if the skin is oozing, crusted, infected-looking, or not settling with gentle care.

Ask which examination or tests fit the rash, which moisturiser or medicine is suitable at your stage of pregnancy, and whether your baby or maternity monitoring needs any change. Bring a list of medicines and photos showing how the rash began.
