Itchy rash causes: common explanations and next steps

A rash where a soap, detergent, adhesive, plant, cosmetic, or fabric touched the skin can fit Contact Dermatitis. Dry, inflamed patches may occur with Atopic Dermatitis or Asteatotic Eczema. Raised areas that come and go can fit Hives. Thickened or scaly plaques may suggest Psoriasis, while a persistent shiny or purplish patch may need assessment for Lichen Planus. Moist red folds can be affected by a Skin Yeast Infection, and intense night itching with close-contact spread can occur with Scabies.

These patterns guide questions but do not replace an examination. Note when the rash started, whether it moves or fades, what touched the area, and whether there is pain, fever, swelling, blistering, or broken skin.

Avoid suspected new products, heat, and friction. Wash gently, pat dry, moisturise dry intact skin, and use a cool compress. Do not share towels or clothing if an infestation is possible, and avoid scratching to reduce skin damage. Take a clear photograph as the rash changes and seek advice before using steroid, antifungal, or insect treatments when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, a rapidly spreading rash, extensive blistering, or skin peeling. Arrange prompt care for fever, severe pain, pus, warmth, eye involvement, or a rash involving the mouth or genitals. A rash that persists, returns, spreads, or disrupts sleep also merits an appointment.
